Arsenal have been linked with a host of potential New Year signings, having not signed an outfield player this summer.
Arsene Wenger brought just goalkeeper Petr Cech in from Chelsea for £10m, but has been hit by an injury crisis.
Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made it eight Arsenal stars on the treatment table, increasing the pressure on Wenger to consider his January options.
But according to former Reading boss McDermott - who is now chief scout at Arsenal - Wenger won't be making big waves in the mid-season transfer market.
"The manager won't spend unless he thinks it's absolutely necessary," McDermott told Sky Sports.
"The scouting structure at Arsenal is phenomenal. We all know who the top strikers in the world are.
"Can you get them to come? They won't be available in January that's an absolute certainty."
Wenger made Real Madrid hitman Karim Benzema his top striker target this summer but the Frenchman refused to leave the Bernabeu.
Reports suggest Arsenal were also in for Paris Saint-Germain ace Edinson Cavani on deadline day but a mooted £50million move never materialised.
"Arsenal have built a strong squad and just one or two more good additions would have strengthened the chances of winning a first title in 11 years," the AST statement read.
"No one wants Arsenal to buy players just for the sake of it, but we do want to see the money being invested to make the club stronger."
