Derek Luke blasts Instagram followers...

Derek Luke has been happily married to actress Sophia Adella Luke for 17 years, and frequently shares snaps of the duo on his Instagram account.

But to his dismay, the 41-year-old Empire actor recently realized that his fans were not quite as taken with their union, with them posting negative comments on his photos regarding his wife's race.

Derek immediately addressed the issue, taking to his account on July 12 to ask: 'But we're in the year of 2015 & when should it be a "problem" to date outside of your race?' 

The Antwone Fisher actor wrote a long, eloquent post defending his wife, who he has been married to for 17 years.

He wrote: 'I never usually entertain the opinions of others because everyone is entitled to they're own opinion. (Positive or Negative)'

'But we're in the year of 2015 & when should it be a "problem" to date outside of your race? Why is that an issue AGAIN? I'm doing the unusual & going through my comments & the comments I see about my wife being another race is bugging me out.'

Derek continued: 'Who one chooses to date is that persons business. Instead of focusing on (Happiness) & (pure Love) for some reason some folks are still focused on (Color). Doesn't make any sense to me. But I guess that's the ignorance of OTHERS.'

'My wife may not be Black but she is mine. And she's mine with a heart of gold. People are so quick to judge but can't even distinguish the difference of another's race.'

He corrected his followers by noting: 'Sophia Luke is Hispanic. She's not white, she's not black, she's not Chinese, she's Hispanic,' adding: 'And she's mine!!'

Sophia is an actress as well, starring in Knockout (2000), and Lying in Wait (2001), and has most recently been working on The Rally-LA.


Derek is famously devoted to his wife, bringing her onstage with him to accept his 2003 Independent Spirit Award for best actor for Antwone Fisher.

He had the brunette beauty sobbing as he handed her the trophy, and announced: 'She is the spirit that has kept me here. I can't accept this award because this belongs to you.'
